Grange-Over-Sands

Grange-Over-Sands is a charming Edwardian resort nestled between the breath-taking vistas of England’s Lake District fells and the long, sandy sweep of Morecambe Bay. It offers one of the mildest climates in the north and is easily accessible with excellent rail and road links. Up until 1887, Grange-over-Sands was inaccessible other than over the sands from Lancaster. It was however transformed from a quaint little fishing village into a fashionable and well loved resort with the advent of the Furness Railway; attracting wealthy merchants who designed beautiful homes and hotels. This set a trend that has been upheld ever since with wonderful architecture, a warm welcome for visitors and a wealth of activities to keep all entertained.

Marvellous limestone buildings still dominate this picturesque seaside town and Grange has much to offer the visitor. A traffic-free promenade, golf courses, ornamental gardens, brass band concerts and vantage points for bird watching are just some of the many attractions on offer. There is a wide range of restaurants, pubs and award-winning cafés to satisfy visitors and a stay here provides the visitor with an ideal base from which to explore both the Lake District Peninsulas of Furness and Cartmel and the Lake District National Park.

Shopping is interesting and varied, with small independent shops offering an intriguing array of goods, crafts and provision.. On Main Street you will find anything from men's and ladies' outfitters, newsagents and ironmongers to chemists, bakeries and jewellers. Elsewhere there are small supermarkets, greengrocers, gifts shops and a delicatessen. You will also have the opportunity to sample unique local produce such as Cumberland sausage, Holker venison, Morecambe Bay shrimps, flukes from Flookburgh, Cumberland rum butter and Kendal mint cake. Wherever you go, you will be struck by the hospitality and warmth of the welcome in Grange, many visitors have made this a holiday destination the return to year after year.

This quiet seaside retreat on the Southern tip of the Cartmel peninsula, between the mountains and the sea, is just seven miles from Lake Windermere. The estuary and the countryside around Grange-over-Sands are fascinating places for nature enthusiasts. A tremendous range of birds can be seen, and there are several nature reserves and sites of special scientific interest.

The area is renowned for its mild climate, unique in the UK. The reason for this is the warmth generated by the Gulf stream washing over Morecambe Bay and Grange-over-Sands which has a higher temperature in Spring than any other place in the North of England.

Within easy reach of Grange are a whole range of interesting and unusual attractions and places of interest. Activities available in and around Grange-Over-Sands include golf, putting, riding, swimming, tennis, watersports, and other activities such as archery, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, parachuting, quad biking and bowling.
