Bamburgh Castle is probably the finest castle in England. It is perched on a basalt outcrop on the very edge of the North Sea at Bamburgh, Northumberland. It commands stunning views of the Farne Islands, Holy Island and land' ward to the Cheviot hills. The castle has been extensively restored, first by Lord Crewe in the 1750's and more recently by the first Lord Armstrong at the end of the 19th century. The castle continues to be the home of the Armstrong family. The castle is open to day visitors and parties of 15 or more, from April to October inclusive. Bamburgh Castle is licensed for civil weddings, providing unsurpassed photo opportunities. The Armstrong Museum and Bamburgh Castle Aviation Artefacts Museum (BCAAM) are housed in the old laundry building in the north ward of the castle. The Armstrong museum details the life of the first Baron Armstrong, through his work as an engineer. Hydraulics, ships, aircraft and arms were some of the many engineering fields in which Lord Armstrong excelled.

Berwick Castle is an important 12th century stone keep and courtyard fortress, founded by King David I. Standing against the steep slope of the River Tweed, its high curtain wall, flanked by nine towers, protected a range of magnificent inner buildings. In 1296-8, King Edward I had the castle rebuilt and the town fortified and in the 16th century, the walls were strengthened with the addition of two semi-circular artillery flanking towers, one at the rivers edge and the other on the angle of the curtain wall. After centuries of Border conflict, the building of the Elizabethan Ramparts isolated the castle and then in 1847, the building of the railway levelled all the remaining buildings and walls, except the west curtain wall and the stepped White Wall, with its spectacular Breakneck Stairs. Nearby is the Bell Tower and the Lord's Mount.

Belsay Castle

Belsay Castle and Belsay Hall are the centre of an estate that has belonged to the Middleton family since the thirteenth century. They lived in the castle until 1817, and from then until 1962 in Belsay Hall. The castle today is approached through the stunning Quarry gardens, created from the extraction of stone to build the new Hall in 1807.As you emerge from the stone walls and trees, the castle sits down away to your left, and a good view of the various dates and styles of building can be seen. On the far right is the original mid-fifteenth century defensive tower, with its crenellated turrets and machicolation still visible. Joined to this on the left is the new range of 1614, built by Thomas Middleton and his wife, Dorothy. The mullioned and transomed windows of the period graphically demonstrate the changing times. Defence was no longer the primary factor, but light and a certain comfort were now required elements for a residence of this status. The castle was extended further probably in about 1711, and an engraving of 1728 shows the balanced building, fronted by formal gardens. It is interesting to note that the more recent the building, the less that remains of the castle now.
