Highcliffe Castle is a Grade I listed building owned by Christchurch Borough Council. It was built between 1831 and 1835 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay, and has been described as "the most important remaining example of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture." Inside the Castle there are 5 partially restored staterooms housing a visitor centre and an exhibition gallery. Guide books can be obtained from the Castle gift shop and guided tours run every Tuesday from 03/02/04 at 2pm or can be pre-booked for groups at other times. An enthusiastic and dedicated team of over 40 people from the local community are on hand to answer your questions about the Castle and its chequered history.
The medieval castle, commanding a gap in the Purbeck Hills is now an imposing ruin and a popular tourist centre drawing on its many years of history. To the left of the castle is what is known as West Hill, and to the right, East Hill. In front of the castle the village, and in the distance a small part of Poole Harbour is apparent.
