West Sussex
West Sussex is in the South of England. A chalk ridge runs from the county's East to West edge and in the South, the land flattens into a gentle plain.
After early Roman invasions, the Saxons moved across Sussex. The Normans deposed them, leaving behind monasteries and castles. West Sussex is essentially a
resort area; Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, and Worthing are the most popular tourist spots.
For the visitor, West Sussex is a beautiful place to explore with art treasures, incredible National Trust properties and scenery that is breathtaking.
One particularly magnificent country house and park to not miss is Petworth House. With an internationally important art collection, the vast late
17th-century mansion is set in a beautiful park, landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown and immortalised in Turner’s paintings. The house contains the Trust’s
finest and largest collection of pictures, with numerous works by Turner, Reynolds , Van Dyck and Blake; as well as fine furniture, ancient and
neo-classical sculpture and carvings by Grinling Gibbons. The Servants’ Quarters contain interesting kitchens and other service rooms that shed light
onto the lifestyles through the ages. On weekdays additional rooms are open to visitors by kind permission of Lord and Lady Egremont.
